IATF 16949 change control for plants without the audit-week scramble
Approval, deployment and audit of every PLC, SCADA and HMI change — aligned to IATF 16949 from day one, generated as a by-product of the work, not assembled the week before the audit.
What counts as an OT change
PLC code
Logic edits, routine changes, function-block swaps, firmware updates.
SCADA tags
Point database additions, alarm threshold edits, scaling changes.
HMI graphics
Screen layout, button bindings, operator permission scopes.
Recipes
Production recipes, setpoints, batch parameters, ingredient lists.
Machine parameters
Drive parameters, IO config, safety thresholds, network topology.
How VEM aligns to IATF 16949
IATF 16949 section 8.5.6 requires the organisation to control and document changes to production processes — including the PLC code, HMI configuration and machine parameters that define the process — and to validate that the change does not adversely affect product conformity. VEM ties every controller change to the PPAP-approved baseline, captures the approver and the diff, and produces the trace evidence required by both the certification body and the customer-specific requirements layered on top. See the broader the complete OT change management guide for the cross-regime crosswalk.
A Tier-1 automotive supplier producing brake assemblies for three OEMs uses VEM to maintain the change record against each customer's PPAP baseline. When an OEM quality auditor requested traceability for a parameter change on a torque station, the supplier produced the full chain — change request, customer notification, approval, deployed diff, post-deploy verification — in two minutes.
Request → Review → Deploy → Audit
Request
Engineer files a change with the proposed diff attached.
Review
CAB or single approver reviews the diff, risk and deployment plan.
Deploy
VEM pushes the approved version, captures before/after signatures.
Audit
Immutable record links request, approval, diff and deployment.
